MATERIAL MATTERS
A show to support the topics of ‘Materials’ and ‘Grouping and Change’
using puppets, traditional stories, original songs and magic!
Adrian is getting ready to do a juggling show and has to decide on the best balls to use for juggling that are hard, heavy, bouncy and keep their shape. There are balls of different materials to choose from –wood, plastic, metal, polystyrene, plasticene, paper, rubber – and the children help him choose the right one for the job. He then has to magic two more of the right material and the children help him choose the best magic wand for the job.
Dustin, the talking dustbin has been collecting different objects to sort into those made of natural and those made of man made materials. The children help him.
In the ‘Tea Shop’ puppet show, Mrs Teapot needs some more cups to serve tea in to the customers. Cups and mugs of different materials are interviewed. Mrs Teapot has to choose the right one for the job. They all think their properties are most suitable but Mrs Teapot may have other ideas!
The original song ‘Right for the Job’ reinforces the properties and uses of materials covered in the show.
Adrian feels hungry and has to decide what he will have for a snack. He notices how the different foods change when cooked – eggs, bread, pasta. He wonders if these can be changed back.
Finally, the theme ‘Choose materials right for the job’ is continued in a puppet show of the traditional story ‘3 Little Pigs.’
A sheet of possible follow discussion points for the classroom is provided.

“What a great, fun way to learn about materials – lots of puppets, magic and song made it an enjoyable and profitable experience. The show created positive learning from a skilled presenter who knows exactly how children learn. It was pitched at just the right level for this age group – a truly educational and delightful experience.”
